The Japanese Inspiration: Dior Samourai 1947 Woven Bag
Dior’s haute couture show for fall winter 2009 associates with luxury, refinement and femininity. Everything on the collection focuses on exquisite details and delicate taste. Gorgeous colors such as fuchsia, primrose, crimson, deep orange and neutral beige and classical black prevailed on accessories and footwear. In comparison with haute couture, Dior fall collection 2009 is more wearable and practical. John Galliano worked with this collection and created some ‘40s inspired apparel and accessories filled with Indian and Asian styles. The gowns and suits are tailored with streamlined, feminine cuts but filled up with bold colors, textural fabrics and bold prints.

The newly released bags feature classical shapes, sleek lines, luscious materials and graceful designs. The black and beige bag whisper about 50s fashion and the snake motive recalls styles of 1980s. Amusingly, John has sourced his inspiration from 1790’s caricature and created the blue transparent sheer gown which set many fashion reviewers to wag their tongue.

In 2007, Japanese artistic elements played on John Galliano’s design for Dior handbags. Dior Samourai 1947 Woven bag was released in celebration of Dior’s 60th anniversary. The hand stitched Japanese hair knot and tortoiseshell frame top are super elaborate. Textural grained leather straps are crafted into a basket woven construction with serpent detail. Rolled leather handle with twisted tie detailing and gusseted sides add a touch of Asian style. Louis XVI picture frame tag with Christian Dior logo dangles from a leather strap. On the flat bottom, there are protective metal feet. Opening the snap clasp closure shows the Dior logo jacquard lining with interior zip pockets. This bag comes in fuchsia, green and brown colors with twisted trim throughout the body and shoulder strap. This is a truly exquisite bag and the favor of it seems to be getting on everybody, including Beyonce. She was spotted leaving Tuscan restaurant toting a fuchsia Samourai 1947 woven bag. Even it is a small size but stunning enough to capture the attention of any eye.

What fabric weave is most durable?
Of the available fabric weaves are cut pile and loop pile more durable than a jacquard or dobby weave? Are those more durable than the basic weaves (i.e. plain, twill, and satin)?
Assuming the same fabric content, the weave with the shortest "float"- thread span- will probably be the sturdiest. A jacquard or satin type weave, with long thread floats will snag more easily. The pile fabrics at the bottom, then jacquard or satin, then twill, then plain (1x1).
Trivia- for making Elizabethan corsets, twill weave isn't recommended, as it will stretch and warp under tension- which is part of why old blue jeans are so comfy... I use cotton duck (a plain weave, canvas-weight) for durability.
