Hand Woven Tapestries – Machine woven v/s Hand woven
There is a great deal of confusion in the marketplace today about the term ‘hand woven tapestries'. Heirloom European Tapestries, experts in hand woven tapestries, often get calls asking how you to tell if a wall tapestry is a genuine hand woven. Here is some information which should help clarify how tapestries are woven and how to tell the difference between a jacquard woven (machine woven) tapestry and a genuine hand woven tapestry.
Tapestries that are woven by hand are exactly that. A weaver must sit before a loom and weave one thread at a time with patience, expertise and a good eye. A hand woven tapestry takes many months to weave. Hundreds of bobbins that contain the colored threads hang along the side of a high warp or low warp loom. Low warp looms are used today for medium size tapestries. This allows the weaver to sit comfortably in front of a table top like loom, pulling in the colored threads one by one from the bobbins and weaving them back and forth through the vertical warp threads (the threads that are the supporting structure) creating the picture that is being woven (weft threads). The high warp looms (or upright looms) are used for the large to enormous tapestries, but the principle for weaving the wall tapestry remains the same.
In hand woven tapestries, inches and sometimes only centimeters (depending on the complexity of the design) are achieved daily. As each foot of the hanging tapestry is complete, it disappears on a roller below the weaver's feet. The tapestry is not seen until the entire hand woven tapestry is complete. The wall tapestry is then taken from the roller, and the result is viewed. As you can appreciate, if the weaver makes any mistakes during the weaving process, it will go undetected until the hand woven wall tapestry is complete. Hand woven tapestries are always woven in 100% wool, or wool/silk. Silk is usually used sparingly and is interwoven with the wool to give highlights to various areas of a tapestry (for example: sunlight on trees, a crown, reflection of water etc). One way to tell if a tapestry is hand woven or not, is to check the back of the wall tapestry. A hand woven tapestry will have hundreds, if not thousands of loose threads hanging off the back. A jacquard (or machine woven tapestry) will have even interlocking threads on the back – no loose ones (the machine has to interlock the threads). If the tapestry is lined, you can run your hand across the back of the lining and can instantly feel the smoothness (jacquard woven) or bumpiness or irregularity of the many threads hanging off the back (hand woven tapestry). Like any art form, it takes years of training and experience for a weaver to become totally proficient at becoming a skilled tapestry weaver. The weaver must have enough experience to be able to interpret the wall hanging design he/she is following. Some weavers become experts in figure work and faces while others specialize in scenery and landscapes. Large and extra large tapestries sometimes require 2 weavers to be working at the loom simultaneously, to accelerate the weaving process. When you purchase a hand woven tapestry you can rest assured that you are buying a piece of art that will appreciate in value and will remain in your family for generations to enjoy.

Custom designing my comforter-- Paint or marker?
I have a nice light beige comforter I'd like to paint/draw some paisley-esque designs on. Only 1 comforter and no room to test spot. Which would be better, to use fabric paint, fabric markers or a permanent marker?
It will be for every day usage. It's a comforter- not a tight weave, packed with cotton, made from cotton and... polyester, I believe. Cheap comforter. Help?
I painted a design on a duvet cover and i used inexpensive craft paint mixed with a fabric medium.after you paint it ,you iron it and it sets the paint so its washable.also paint looks nicer.
