Should I use silk velvet or cotton velvet?
I want to sew a velvet dress that would obviously look good but will endure possible rain and other weather and will be not too difficult (=expensive) to take care of - it's very probable it will get dirty easily - mud, dust etc. It is a bit complicated to explain the use, so please, lets let it at this. I want natural fibers or a silk blend. I know silk velvet is superior to cotton velvet with the look but I'm concerned it's too delicate for my needs. I know cotton velvet can be carefully washed by hand. Is silk velvet (silk+rayon or silk+viscose) really dry clean only? Will it withstand rather frequent cleaning and not really sensitive handling while worn? If silk velvet would still work, what are the proprieties of rayon x viscose in the blend?
I do a lot of costuming & for outdoor wear I'd always choose cotton velvet generally I use old curtains, I always machine wash my costumes that are heavily worn & I start by washing the fabric at 10 degreee C higher than I want to wash the garment, this will get most loose dye off and helps to prevent bleed if you are trimming the garment. I love sillk velvet but it is too pricy to wear roughly. Bear in mind cotton velvet will be very heavy if soaked through (and you'll get VERY cold), so you might want to look at a melton wool if it is going to get very wet, eg for a riding habit, walking suit etc A nice fulled wool can look great.
