From Crib to Toddler Bed
Many toddlers do not adapt well to change. Switching from a crib to a toddler bed can be exciting for some but scary for others. Children usually switch from a crib to a toddler bed around the age of 18 months to 3 years old. A sure sign that your toddler is ready for the big switch is if the toddler is too big (3 feet) or very active. The child may start to climb out of the crib or keep waking up in the middle of the night because he or she keeps scooting around the crib and bumping into the sides. Another sure sign is that the child is not able to stretch properly or has begun to potty train. Potty training means a lot of waking up in the middle of the night and climbing out of the bed. Some parents may feel that there children may not be ready for the switch because they have become to attached to the crib and may begin to cry at night. The crying may happen but it is only temporary. It is better for the child to be crying because of the change than to be crying because he was hurt climbing out of his crib.
Make the switch easier for your toddler by talking to him in advance about the change. Get him excited and involved with the switch. Take the child with you to pick out his new bed. Let him see all the different styles of sheets and let him be the one to choose the new sheets. Do not get rid of the crib just yet. Leave the crib in the room for a couple of days along with the toddler bed. The child can sleep in the crib at night and take naps on the new bed during the day. The toddler bed can also be used for several quiet play sessions. This will help your child feel more comfortable and safe in his new bed. Consider lowering the crib mattress as far as you can to make the rails higher during this process just to be safe. Child-proof your home once your child starts to sleep in his new bed. Your toddler may start to wonder once he is out of the crib and we would not want the child getting hurt.

How do you make the transition from crib to toddler bed?
From reading answered questions, I saw that from around 18 months to 2 and a half seems about the time to move out of the crib.
How do you help your child understand the transition?
Do you remove the crib from the room and add the bed, or do you keep the crib around for a bit?
Did you use a pillow, sheets and blankets right away, or just a fitted sheet like a crib? My daughter's never used a blanket in her crib.
It was rough for us because we made the transition too early- by necessity (the crib was recalled and she was nearly two anyway). We ended up transitioning the crib into a bed and turning it around so that the opening faced the wall. We did that because she would roll off the bed onto the floor. We'd stuff a body pillow in the gap so that she wouldn't fall, we'd give her one blanket and a pillow, and after awhile she got her bearings. we turned the bed with the opening facing out like you are supposed to do and then took a large pillow (long) and stuffed it between the mattress and the assistant rails to act a s a bed guard. Finally we left it off and she no longer fell out of the bed..
If you don't have to make this change, don't before your child is ready- there is no point and your child is safer while you are sleeping... They can't roam about if they are still in the crib and you can get more sleep.
If you are worried about your toddler climbing out- I would get a crib tent.
Tamara: It's not a cage- that's ridiculous... however, you have a point, that is- if the child is over two years old...

I have heard of many other parents doing this to discourage a child from attempting to climb out. If your child is developed enough to be able to climb out successfully without injury, then putting them in a toddler bed should be no problem at all- if they are just old enough to think about climbing out, but are not physically capable of doing so without serious injury, there is a good chance they are just curious about climbing out and are not yet ready to make the transition to the bed.
The crib tent can confuse them enough that they won't try to climb out. Eventually they'll figure it out, and by that time they will be ready for a bed.
