In the 1956 film Moby-Dick, why does Ahab have a gray stripe through his beard and hair?

I don't actually know. I've never read the book and I don't remember if it was mentioned in the movie. Sorry.

But I can speculate. A gray streak can be the result of a stressful or traumatic experience. So maybe the streak symbolizes Ahab's obsessive quest to hunt down the white whale. A reminder of the time he's spent seeking vengeance. Or maybe it stems directly from his first encounter with Moby Dick.

Or maybe the filmmakers just thought it would be a cool look for Ahab on screen. A neat physical characteristic to separate the captain from everyone else.

I know the book describes Ahab as "an old man" and that many people thought that Gregory Peck was too young to play the part (he was 38). Maybe they gave Peck a gray streak to show that Ahab was old.

Just searching the Internet, Captain Ahab isn't always depicted the same way. Sometimes he has all-gray hair. Sometimes no beard. So the gray streak, if mentioned in the book, couldn't have been deemed very important. I'm guessing it was a creative choice for the 1956 film.
