Beijing trains?? Soft-sleeper/hard-sleeper?

I am looking at booking an overnight train from Beijing to Shanghai, and looking at hard/soft sleepers, I would ideally like to take a hard sleeper train, but the only disadvantages are that they are only 4 berth, and not two berth as I would prefer and well that they are "hard" sleepers. The time leaving and arriving is just perfect for us, but what I want to know is whether you would advise against foreigners travelling on cheaper hard sleepers in China, or whether this is perfectly okay and comfortable? Any tips? thank you in advance!

The first couple of hours in a hard sleeper may seem like an adventure, but it goes downhill rapidly after that. The accommodations are cramped, crowded, and uncomfortable. The tickets are cheap for a reason.

If you want to have a reasonably pleasant trip and any chance of catching some sleep, then you must opt for the soft sleeper (1st class).

If you have never been on a Chinese train before, then talk to some friends who have. Bring food and drinks, in case you don't like the on-board offerings. Be sure to bring a small towel, tooth brush, tooth paste, shaver (for guys), and comb for use on-board. Keep your passport, cash, and valuables on your person at all times. If you have a money belt, then this is the optimal time to use it.
