Goose down’s high quality comes from the way it grows on a goose. The down grows in bigger, thicker clusters than duck down and is odorless. Duck down, on the other hand, smells unpleasantly.
Not all goose down comforters are created equally. Lower quality comforters mix feathers and down together. While all the feathers cannot be removed from down completely, expect to see a tiny feather count in higher quality comforters. Heavy, hard feathers make a comforter feel firm. Fluffy, lightweight comforters have more down than feathers. Furthermore, those obtrusive feathers can poke at you through a comforter.
Different types of geese contain different types of goose down. For example, the superb thermal qualities in Siberian goose down makes it the best choice for a goose down comforter. Eiderdown, originating from Iceland’s Eider ducks, is one the most luxurious and warmest types of goose down. Hungarian goose down is another prevalent preference.
Allergic individuals can find hypoallergenic goose down comforters to keep their allergies subdued. Hypodown comforters mix Hungarian goose down with milkweed and can be purchased at outlets as well as department stores and linen shops.
