Bringing Big Impact to Small Spaces
Just because you are working with a small space does not mean that is has to feel cramped or even small for that matter. By using pattern, color and texture as you select the appropriate furnishings for your space, it can all work together to truly create a great room design. You do not need a large space to make a big impact.
Everything Counts: When you are working with a small space you have to be brutal when it comes to editing. Make sure that you place each furnishing in the space purposefully. Take care to have the pieces of furniture relate to each other without becoming too crowded, and you can to this by keeping your scale consistent throughout the design of the room.
Think Big: Instead of filling the room full of a bunch of small furniture, small accessories and small artwork, make a big impact in the space by choosing larger furnishings that serve multiple purposes, and remember to keep their scale consistent throughout.
Magic of Mirrors: Especially in a small space, a mirror can offer visual expansiveness. Mirrors are functional, they open a space by reflecting light around the room; but they also reflect the room back into itself, which in essence doubles the space visually. You can also use mirrors to repeat your favorite elements in the room giving a beautiful image huge visual impact.
Fabric and Texture: Keep the fabrics in the room as simple and streamlined as possible. If you have large or overstuffed furniture, keep the fabrics as close to neutral as possible. Instead of using patterns in your fabrics, repeat the color but change the texture. For example, in a bedroom, you may have a sateen duvet with velvet pillows a chenille throw and a faux fur area rug all in the same shade of sage green. The subtle variation in fabric will actually make its own pattern.
Balance Shapes: You can use some big shapes to visually extend the room. For example, if you have large horizontal stripes in a space, you will visually widen a space. Just as if you have large vertical stripes, you will elongate a space visually. So look at the shape of your room and see if it is off balance and then use this optical illusion to balance the room. By softening the hard lines of the room with gentle curves in your furniture shapes, you add visual interest and elegance to your room.
Light Expands: One of the most important elements in any room is light. You can create a space that is peaceful, dramatic, or just plain functional. Pocket lights or recessed lighting are a great way to light up an entire room. Add spotlights or track lighting for drama, wall sconces to create ambient light, and table lamps for task lighting.
Tight Color Palette: While you should always be adventurous and experiment with color, in a small space you will want to use bold color judiciously. Edit your color palette, and understand that in small spaces you will want to create as little contrast as possible to keep the room visually expansive.

simplicity pattern question dealing with fabrics?
on the back, where it lists the "Fabrics:", do you need to buy ALL of the fabrics? On the particular one I'm looking at, it says:
"Fabrics: Denim, Corduroy, Poplin, Seersucker, Twill, Sateen, Lightweight Wool and Wool Blends, Linen and Linen Blends, Extra Fabric needed to match plaids, stripes or one-way design fabrics."
I plan to make some denim shorts. The pattern is Simplicity 3850. I posted another question about this exact pattern if you can look at that to see the link to the pattern preview picture. Very appreciated

No, the list of suggested fabrics are those that will work well with the pattern. If you want denim shorts, and the list includes denim, buy the length specified for the size.
Why this is important: Patterns are intended for a particular fabric, or a fabric that drapes like a particular fabric. If you were to make up the same pattern in three different fabrics -- let's say a stiff fabric like Levis 501s typically come in, a medium weight fabric like a lightweight cotton twill and a very drapey fabric, like a lightweight t-shirt knit, and the pattern is intended for medium drape fabric, the Levi 501 fabric will look like clown pants, and the t-shirt knit ones will look skimpy, like you bought 'em at worse than Walmart. When you're ready to pick your own fabrics, look for a fabric that drapes like one of the fabrics specified on the pattern.
Fabrics come in various widths, and the yardage charts typically give you yardage for 45" and 60" wide fabric. At least as a beginner, don't try to skimp when buying fabric... better a little too much than too little. If the fabric you're looking at is in some odd width like 52", ask the help of someone who has sewn for awhile to help you choose the amount to buy. If you can't find someone who really knows (and a lot of chain fabric stores don't have anyone working there who sews!) then buy the amount specified for the next narrower width... so in the case of 52" wide denim, buy the yardage specified for 45", not 60".
