is it better to get sateen, satin, silk, or cotton for max softness?
I use cotton. Sateen and satin slip easily, and silk doesn't breathe. Plus I have a cat so I can easily launder the cotton duvet cover to remove the cat hair. This also makes the duvet so fresh and fantastic smelling that you can't wait to sink into bed!
Just make sure to get a high quality cotton - Egyptian with a high thread count. Beware of low-end cottons with high thread counts that just result in a stiff, cardboard-like product. Also, use bedding cotton. I once had a custom made duvet cover out of upholstery-grade cotton that was like sleeping under a drapery panel. Needless to say, not very comfortable.
