British Royals Make History

At 85 years of age, Queen Elizabeth II made history with her four-day state visit to Ireland. It was the first time a British monarch had visited the Irish Republic since independence.

The state visit was said to be vital if the two nations are to move on to create mutual respect between them.

Professor of Contemporary Irish History, Eunan O'Halpin said the royal visit was like two neighbours who don't particularly like each other, beginning to get along. "You turn down your music, you give back their football, this is life."

If the Queen's visit was to be taken seriously, many felt it was necessary for her to visit places such as the scene of one of the worst massacres, a football match in 1902 at Croke Park, at which English troops opened fire and kill 14 civilians.

"Mary McAleese's presidency has had the theme of building bridges. This is one very important bridge" said Jane Ohlmeyer, Professor of Modern History at Trinity College Dublin.

The English royal family is in the middle of creating history on a variety of fronts.

Queen Elizabeth II will commemorate her Diamond Jubilee, her 60th year of reign, in 2012. She is the second longest reigning Queen, after Queen Victoria, who died in 1901, after reigning for 63 years.

62 years old, Prince Charles is the longest-serving heir apparent in English history. Queen Victoria's son, King Edward VII previously held that record. He ruled for just 9 years, prior to his death in 1910.

After the break up with his first wife, Prince Charles became the first royal to be involved in a civil marriage when he married Camilla Parker Bowels on the 9th April in 2005.

Queen Elizabeth's sister, Princess Margaret was refused permission to marry a divorced man, who was 16 years her senior. The Archbishop of the Church of England, the Prime Minister and his cabinet demanded that Peter Townsend be banished overseas in the early 1950s.

Princess Margaret was merely 3rd in line to the English throne, as Queen Elizabeth had two children already, Charles and Anne.

Newlywed Prince William is also high in the history making stakes. He has been polled as being the most trusted member of the royal family, in front of his grandmother, the Queen.

Why Did Queen Anne Refuse Royal Assent to an Act of Parliament?

In order to become law, an Act of the British Parliament is required to receive Royal Assent (approval) from the Queen. In modern times, Royal Assent is automatic. The last time the Royal Assent was withheld was in 1707, when Queen Anne refused to assent to a bill that would have introduced the militia into Scotland.

Why did Queen Anne refuse to assent? Did she act on her own or on the advice of her ministers? Did Parliament change its mind and ask her to veto the bill? What were the circumstances that gave rise to this action?

The Scottish Militia Bill is the usual name given to a bill that was passed by the House of Commons and House of Lords of the Parliament of Great Britain in spring 1708, but vetoed by Queen Anne on the advice of her ministers on 11 March 1708 for fear that the proposed militia created would be disloyal.

The bill's long title was "An Act for settling the Militia of that Part of Great Britain called Scotland."

"On the advice of her ministers," sounds like a reference to the Prime Minister. It may be that, after the bill was passed, doubts about the loyalty of the militia were entertained, and it was decided to scrap the bill before it became law.
