The hangout of the rich and famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills is probably the best known and most expensive shopping street in the world. It begins with Wilshire Boulevard to the south and extends northwards to Santa Monica Boulevard at which point the commercial section alters to an upscale residential section.
Only three blocks long but packed with more than one hundred shops of celebrated international clothing designers, well known jewellery stores and hotels, this shopping venue of the rich and famous epitomizes money and glamour. Hordes of tourists are to be found window shopping and gaping at all the luxury cars parked on the sidewalk waiting for a glimpse of someone famous. The world's most expensive shop Bijan is located on Rodeo Drive. The proximity to Hollywood no doubt plays a part in the excitement.
The most ostentatious segment of the locale is its newest section Via Rodeo located on the northeast border of Wilshire and Rodeo. This is an outdoor mall which resembles a European avenue with a cobbled street, two or three storey building facades, romantic archways, fountains, balconies and a piazza. This street is adorned with wrought iron lamps while the buildings have polished brass fixtures and ornate planters with colourful plants. Via Rodeo manages to form an impression of free standing buildings with stone, brick and marble facades. This is the area that is most popular with visitors and where most of the souvenir photos are taken.
Beyond this Rodeo Drive is a four lane highway with European style low rise buildings and trees lining both sides of the boulevard and where the center dividers are planted lavishly with flowers to suit the seasons. Rodeo Drive is at its best during the holiday period in December when it is festooned with lights and decorations and all the stores too put out their best.
