Better to avoid pillowtop mattresses. A pillowtop mattress is a normal mattress with a layer of extra padding on top. It will wear out and flatten down, long before the actual mattress will begin to show a dent. But it is sewn on! And you pay an extra hundred bucks for it! Buy a mattress pad instead.
Rotating 180 degrees and flipping the mattress lengthwise on a regular basis will increase the durability and comfort.

should a good mattress have side supports?
Hello ! onto my 2nd mattress now and double grrrrr!!!
The latest one came yesterday..... of a website.......pillowtop...........sat on the side and there is no side support ! the thing collapses and almost touch's the bottom ! thought ok beds are for sleeping not sitting on .but has my first nights sleep and it was like sleeping on a air bed! felt the bed swaying side to side on the springs!, felt every time my partner moved! So here is the question........... should a good quality mattress have side support ? the listing said:

hummm doesnt match anything as per the description, I dont like it should they refund? HELP !

Oh the dangers of shopping for a bed without being able to try it out first. Happened to me with the Sleep Number, triple grrrrrr!!!!!! Such a horrible bed! I couldn't send it back because I had bought the last years model at a close out price, stuck paying $2,000. and couldn't wait to get rid of it.
Yes, the bed should have support at the sides. It should be supportive everywhere. Did you get a refund warranty with it, I hope? If so, send it back! I'm disabled due to severe spine problems, severe chronic pain, and have to be very, very careful as to what mattress I buy. I've found a wonderful one called 'The Cloud 9' I think made by Serta. Granted you have to buy it online but you can try one out by staying at a 'Inn-Suites' hotel that carries them in their rooms. Oh my God, they are sooooo comfortable! Perfection! And I'm super picky, actually beyond super picky. Some other chain hotels are starting to carry them also. Good luck and I hope you get your money back.
P.S. BTW, having a mattress with too much pillow top isn't always the best way to go, it can cause back pain just as much as a regular bad mattress. Look for something not too small, not too much, but just right.
