NFL - Atlanta makes it into the Playoffs after beating Seattle 34-18

The Atlanta Falcons are the undisputed leaders of the NFC South. With a record of twelve wins and only two defeats so far, the Falcons secured their berth in the NFL playoffs after beating the Seattle Seahawks 34-18 in the fifteenth week of NFL's regular season.

Atlanta has not have a major role in the National Football League. The team has won a conference championship, three division titles and from 1978 up to the current season it has made it ten times into the playoffs.

The Falcons have remained among the lowest positions in the NFC South in recent seasons. Its best moments have been in 2004 when they won the division championship and in 2008, when they were named the conference wild card. Atlanta is coming off a season in which he finished second in the shadow of the now defending champion New Orleans Saints.

For the 2010-11 season, the Falcons wanted to outshine the New Orleans Saints. Atlanta opened the season with a 15-9 defeat at Pittsburgh, but then scored four straight wins with which it started to excel in the division.

Philadelphia's managed to beat Atlanta 31-17 in the sixth week breaking the 4 game streak, but the following week the Falcons made a significant comeback and before going to their bye week marked the first of a series of eight consecutive victories that put them in top of the division and gives them a deserved playoff berth.

Atlanta reached the playoffs after defeating the Seattle Seahawks by 34-18. Compared to Atlanta, Seattle is a team with a very similar level of performance, albeit with greater presence in the NFC West, where it holds six division titles and a conference championship and has made it into the playoffs ten times (between 1983 and 2007).

The most recent winning seasons in Seattle have been from 2004 to 2007 when the squad won the division championship. The Seahawks finished third in 2009, now in 2010 with a record of six wins and eight defeats so far, stood no chance of reaching the playoffs.

The Falcons were a much stronger squad from the beginning. Even though the Seahawks had the home field advantage, they were not much of a hazard for the Falcons. In the first quarter Seattle had the opportunity to advance and took advantage to open the scoring with a touchdown halfway through the period.

Atlanta took control of the game in the second quarter and heavily attacked the local team. The Falcons had not much trouble to score a touchdown and a field goal that made the score 10-7. Seattle responded with a field goal, but the Falcons retaliated with other touchdown just seconds from the end of the first half.

During the third quarter, Seattle just couldn't keep up with the Falcons. With two more touchdowns and one field goal the Falcons were up on the scoreboard 34-10. Seattle tried again and scored a touchdown but it was not enough to keep Atlanta taking yet another win 34-18.

Atlanta managed to become, after New England, the second team to qualify for the NFL postseason. Atlanta's quarterback Matt Ryan threw 35 passes and completed 20, for three touchdown and 174 yards and one interception. Seattle used its starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who after completing 10 of 17 passes, recording 71 yards and two interceptions, was replaced by Charlie Whitehurst, who only had the opportunity to perform 8 completions for 83 yards.

Why did the NFL move the Minnesota/Atlanta game from 1pm to 4:15pm?

Flex scheduling.

The game had playoff implications, seeing how both teams seem destined to progress to the playoffs.

They wanted everyone to see a potentially good game rather then on missing it or forcing everyone to watch a game no one cared about.
