Amir Khan is touted as the next Manny Pacquiao in boxing

No less than the legendary coach of Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, Freddie Roach predicted that rising British boxing star Amir Khan will be the next superstar in boxing just like the Pacman, the globally recognized best-pound for pound boxer today.

Roach who currently trains Khan at the famous Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, Californiae> revealed the 22-year-old boxer has the power, skills and speed like Pacman to make him a future king of professional boxing.

The famous American boxing trainer said the world will see how good Khan is when he battles Andreas Kotelnik for the Ukrainian's WBA light-welterweight belt in Manchester on 18 July. He said like Pacman, his favorite pupil, Khan trains hard which could make him somebody be a fearsome champion in the world and be acknowledge as best boxer in the planet.

Roach said he had high hopes that after dethroning Kotelnik, Khan can be given big fights to the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez and even fellow British and boxing star Ricky Hatton whom Pacman knocked out early this year. Khan for his part expressed joy over the strong confidence of Roach to his skills as a boxer.

He said the hard training he undergo and the previous heated sparring session he had with Pacman made him a strong fighter and offer him big chance to prevail over Kotelnik. The rising British boxing star said it will be a tough fight but he is confident of prevailing over Kotelnik in their incoming fight.

The former Olympic boxer said Kotelnik is a good boxing champion but it is now his time to shine and rise from his only loss against Columbian boxer Breidis Prescott via  a humiliating first round knock-out in front of his hometown fans. Before his fight against Kotelnik, Khan recently dispatched Oisin Fagan before Christmas and dismantled Marco Antonio Barrera in March.

Kotelnik had already earlier said that he will exert effort to win against Khan and show the world he is ready to take the next big step in his boxing career. He said he will teach Khan a boxing lesson he will never forget during their much awaited fight.

Kotelnik turned pro in 2000 and won his first 23 bouts prior to losing to Souleymane M'baye in Paris in 2004 via split decision. In 2005, he lost in a European title clash to Junior Witter on a close unanimous decision, but later in the year defeated former Olympic gold medalist Mohamad Abdulaev. Kotelnik beat Gavin Rees for the WBA light-welterweight title on 22nd March 2008 in the Cardiff International Arena via 12th round TKO and made his first successful defense in his hometown of L'viv against Japanese champion Norio Kimua.

Despite the odds against him even if he is the champion, Kotelnik, who himself won the Lightweight Silver Medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics for his part also expressed confidence of disposing the speedy Khan in their incoming encounter.

The Ukrainian boxing champion said he studied the movements of Khan and will use his experience to defeat the latter and retain his crown. He said on the day of their fight he would show the world how good he is as a boxing champion by defeating Khan in front of his own people. Has there ever been a televised boxing match between fighters of different weight classes?

Has there ever been a televised boxing match between fighters of different weight classes?
If there was a match between different weight classes then please give details.. who faced each other? at what weight class were each of them?

Normally a fight between fighters of different weights is done at a "catchweight", this means a weight in the middle to make things fairer. If a boxer is two weight divisions above his proposed opponent (lets say one is a super middleweight and one a jr middleweight) then an ideal catchweight would be middleweight as it is fair to both parties. This means both people do almost weigh the same come fight night so may not answer your question.

Roy jones fought John Ruiz for the heavyweight title and I believe he (Jones) came in weighing as a small cruiserweight so they were almost defintely a weight division apart.

David Haye fought Valuev, although they were both heavyweights Valuev weighed 7 stone more than Haye, that is the biggest weight difference I can think of in any fight.

In history many fights were held in this manner but I am unsure if they were televised so cannot answer for sure. Back then boxers sure were tougher and there were far fewer weight divisions so when someone took on a boxer from the weight above them that is equivalent to two weight divisions in modern boxing.

Hope this helps.
