The Wanderer: Part 9 of 73
The Wanderer by Callie Roos, motivational speaker and author
Part 9 of 73
I was a little kid when my mother took me to the doctor. 'The child is wearing down his shoes on the outside,' she told him. The doctor explained that my wheel alignment was faulty. In passing, he mentioned to her that I would never really be able to run or participate in sports.
Xaba, I can't remember my mother or the doctor ever actually telling me that I would not be able to run. What I do remember is that every time my mother met any of her friends around town, the story was casually repeated. The story of the child who would never be able to run or participate in sport. Time and again, the same story: 'The child will never be able to run.' "The doctor told my mother that I should wear my shoes the wrong way around for two years. The left shoe on my right foot and the right shoe on my left foot. Get the picture? A little boy standing at the school gate wearing his little grey school shorts and shirt, and a pair of short socks. In my hand is one of those little boxy cases with my sandwiches in it. My left shoe is on my right foot and my right shoe is on my left foot. Ridiculous!" Xaba smiles.
"I just didn't do it," I say. "I was too stubborn." "Even then? Nothing has changed," says Xaba. "What happened?" he asks. "Well, I think I just heard the story over and over again." Every time the ladies got together, I heard the same story. That is what mothers do when they get together; talk about their children and the school. Then I would hear them say: 'He will never be able to run, never take part in sport'.
When I had heard it often enough, it somehow became my truth.
