Teen Sex - is The Internet to Blame?
The other day I was watching Tyra Banks show on TV and the shocking topic of the day was, teens and pregnancy. Young, beautiful teenage girls trying to get pregnant. Now a quick question comes to mind, for this little cutie to be now thinking of baby making, for how long has she been sexually active?
The most shocking fact was that 95% of the teens present had been sexually active since they were twelve, and the youngest pregnant girl was only thirteen.
The million dollar question is, who is to blame for this worrying trend? Is it the exposure to the adult contents on television and the internet? What about the society?
I had a divorced neighbor who was raising a daughter alone. When her little girl started having sex at a tender age, she was devastated. We blame married couples for being too explicit in their homes, what of that girl, whose only parent was living a sexually inactive life?
One thing that stood out in the Tyra show I referred to above was the fact that all the teens wanted babies because they felt lonely and ignored by their lover or parent. One even stated that she started having sex to get her mother's attention. This brings me to the point I wanted to bring across... parents blame the internet for all that goes wrong in their teen... and, while the internet is not blameless because of all that alluring sex material, how close are we to our kids? Many a parent confuses issues by thinking that a model parent is the one that gives their kids everything they want. So we end up raising very comfortable but emotionally empty kids.
When a child goes around feeling loveless and unwanted because the only person that matters to them is too busy for them, what do we expect? We provide our children with all the expensive communication gadgets but deny them the very basic, namely, our attention and guidance. We have left baby sitting to the television and counseling to the internet and in so doing, destroyed the very kids we are working hard for, and purport to love.
In light of the above, is the internet really to blame for all the teen moral degradation? I think that is very debatable.
