Is it safe to wash a quilt in the washing machine after it's been dry cleaned?
I took a handmade quilt to the dry cleaners thinking that was the safest way to clean it. The colors bled anyway. Since dry cleaning wasn't as safe as I thought, I thought I might as well wash it at home with the gentle cycle and cold water. But I've heard you shouldn't wash something once it's been chemically treated and dry cleaned. What should I do? This is a quilt made by my grandmother, and I want it to last a long time, but it's also my regular bedding, so it gets a lot of use and I want to keep it clean.
Yes you may wash it cold water and gentle cycle. If you look in the laundry section of your market there are products that will draw out the dyes that ran. Carbona is one. Dry on a clothes line or hang over the shower curtain rod do not put it in the clothes dryer.
This quilt will not last a long time if it is your bedding. No matter how careful you are. Just the gentle pulling when you make the bed wears the threads in the fabric. but I think grandma would be happy you are enjoying it..
