The History of Silk

The history of silk dates back almost 5,000 years to ancient China.  The discovery of silk is attributed to Lady Hsi-Ling-Shih, the Goddess of Silk, although recent archeological finds date back to over 7,000 years ago.  A fabric revered by emperors and royalty alike, there were wars fought along the Silk Road for control of the fabric.  The Chinese used it as currency and traded it with the Romans pound for pound with gold.  Silk was used to pay politicians and worthy citizens in China.  Silk has one of the longest histories of any known fabric.

China maintained a monopoly of silk until 300 A.D. by threatening their citizens with death for anyone who tried to export silk eggs to other countries.  Soon after, silk was spread to Europe by way of the Silk Road.

Silk boomed in Italy in the 11th and 12th centuries and the cities of Florence, Venice, and Genoa flourished.  Silk was still coveted as a luxury item, but was becoming more widely available.

Throughout history, most all nations have coveted silk, including Persians, Asians, and Europeans.  Silk production has doubled in the past 30 years, making it more widely available.  There are many applications for silk beyond clothing, although silk is very comfortable and light making it a great choice for clothing.

Today silk is still a luxury item, but it is gaining popularity as an alternative to down which is known to cause allergic reactions.  Silk is a hypoallergenic fabric, making it a great alternative to down comforters and for allergy sufferers.

Why are silk and gold haram to wear on earth, but then promised in Jannah?

Is it the items themselves that are haram, or so that people are humble enough to deny such pleasures on earth knowing they'll get them in the afterlife?
- Will wearing lots of gold and silk still look feminine in Jannah?

As Salaam to you all,

The Prophet (pbuh) held up gold in one hand and silk in the other and said that this is forbidden for the men in my Ummah. (Bakari & Muslim)

Gold is forbidden as a means to bring all men towards each other as the same in wealth or outward appearance of wealth. It was also forbidden due to the heavy gold rings and ornaments worn by men at the time which went back to the pagan days before Islam. The opulance given to gold and silk which were highly priced items were not worthy of the struggle that Islam was going through, when food was scarce at times.

Silk is allowed for men, who due to medical reasons have a need to wear such items next to their skin but only during the time of the condition.

Gold can be both white or yellow, although most gold is of the yellow variety. However, we see today our religious leaders and the leaders of certain countries wearing gold around their outer garments. Or we see the Army, Navy and Air Force officers, plus the police of so called Islamic countries wearing gold regalia to boost their office title. This is an introduction to Islam that is not of it and as such can be classed as an inovation, which is Bidda.

Even the color yellow is forbidden to be worn within the musjid, so that confusion cannot be put into someones mind that the person wearing it, is not wearing gold.

What is forbidden within this world for Muslims to drink or wear will be allowed in paradise, where we will wear the finest of clothes, Insha'Allah.
