Gold and Its Uses

The gold is famous for its beauty and relative scarcity. It is a valuable commodity throughout the human history. Several wars have been fought for its gain and protection.

The characteristics of gold make it more expensive and precious. It is a soft but stable metal and alloy rarely with other elements. It conducts heat and electricity. Its unique malleability and ductility have made it a favorite metal for jewelry. It can be hammered into a sheet so thin that light can pass through it. A single ounce of gold can be drawn into a wire thread about 50 miles long.

Its symbol is Au. It is drawn from Latin word aurum. Its mean shining dawn and bright yellow color and shiny luster. The word is drawn from Middle English. Gold mines are found in almost all countries but the US, South Africa, Peru, Brazil, Australia and Canada are at the top list.

Mostly, it is used to make jewelry. People like to wear items with gold. It is also used for some art work. It is reliable for art making because it's stable and conducts electricity. Gold is a hedging metal and is likely stored against times of economic uncertainty.

Palladiums, platinum and silver are the substitutes of it. Gold is often made into alloy with different metals and is widely used in jewelry and electronics to reduce the amount of gold used while assuring the positive features for which gold is desired.

Gold is also used in many engineering application. Gold coated glasses are used for climate controlled buildings. These gold-coated glasses reflect solar radiations outward and make the indoor temperature at normal level. Thin sheets called gold leaf adorns many architectural designs.

Today, gold is found as a very efficient ingredient in food, drink and cosmetics. The desktops and laptops also use gold as effective semi conductor. The medical science found gold very useful as dental fillings. Television, cell phone, calculators, global positioning system has gold as their building component. It is a good conductor, and unlike other metals, it is perfect for transmitting rapid and digital information.

Usage of gold are increasing overtime, it is also used for medical implementation like liver diseases, ear problems, anergia, and arthritis. It is an inert metal; it doesn't work with any other substance. Hence, there is lot of uses which cannot be defined in just one article. It is truly an invaluable metal!

To do this we are going to have to assume that the density of the gold will remain the same after pounding. According to Wikipedia, the density of gold is 19.3 g/cm³, and its atomic radius is 135 pm, so its diameter is 270 pm, or 2.7x10^-10 m. The thickness of the gold after pounding is:
(1 g) / (19.3 g/cm³) (1x10^6 cm³/m³) (1 m²) = 5.8x10^-8 m. The thickness in gold atoms is then:
(5.8x10^-8 m) / (2.7x10^-10 m/Au Diameter) = 192 Au Diameters thick.
