How to Buy a Bunk Bed - Quick Guide on How to Buy a Bunk Bed for Your Kids' Bedroom
Modern bunk beds are very different form years past. When I was a kid, a bunk bed was more or less a twin size bed on top another twin size bed with a ladder to reach the top bunk. I loved my bunk bed! Half the time I spent on the top, and a few years later my brother and I switched and I took the bottom. It was like my own private little space. Made from either metal or wood, bunk beds back then were very efficient space saving furniture pieces. Today, they remain to be one of the most efficient pieces of furniture in a parent's home, and have become even more functional than the bunk beds of the past.
Nowadays, bunk beds have added all sorts of features that never existed before. Take the staircase for example. Many bunk beds today feature a set of stairs which allow the individual climbing to the top bunk (or the parent tucking in their child at night) the safety and comfort of using a staircase! This bunk bed safety feature also adds new space for drawers and storage under the staircase. On the opposite side facing the bed, many even have a book rack for those bed time story books. Called staircase bunk beds or stair stepper bunk beds, they offer a unique solution to the old issue of having to climb a ladder.
Another neat thing about modern day bunk beds is that they come in more sizes than just twin over twin. There are bunk beds that are sized twin over full, and even full over full now for bigger kids and adults who might need a space saving solution. Do you have to have a special type of mattress for bunk beds?
For christmas my mother is buying my daughter bunk beds, and we do not want to get the crappy little foam ones that they sell with the beds, so my question is can you get any special kind of mattresses for bunk beds and if so where is the best place to look?
It depends on the bunk beds. Many have mattress thickness (height) restrictions so that the surface of the mattress is not so thick that the top bunk is unsafe (the surface of the mattress, if too high, will come too close to the top of the guardrail.)
If there is a height restriction, and your daughter will be sleeping on the bottom bunk, you might want to consider purchasing an innerspring mattress for the bottom bunk where she will sleep, and a foam bunkie mattress for the top bunk where there will only be a person sleeping occasionally.
If she is sleeping on the top bunk (make sure she's at least 6 years old... older is better for the top bunk) then you'll need to observe height restrictions for her safety or have a custom furniture builder make adjustments to the height of the guardrail.
Also, you need to find out if the style of bunkbeds she's purchasing requires the use of a "bunkie board" which is a platform of sorts that stabilizes the surface under the mattress since there is no box spring used under the mattress in a bunk bed. Some beds have a platform already (you can just top these with a mattress) but some have rails that go across and you may need a bunkie board.
